Over the last few years we have been developing our knowledge on a couple of sites in Wisbech St Mary. A small team of our members is currently working on some test pits in a field we only recently got permission to dig. The initial results are promising and the website will be updated as we are able. As always, we are very grateful to the farmers who have allowed us onto their land.
I was able to visit the site again today and the progress the team is making is extraordinary. One very well dug and developed pit, with post holes and possible door and one smaller pit where, as well as pottery, some evidence of diet has been found including an oyster shell.
Monday 21 October update
The ditch found in pit one is being developed and at least one of the post holes is actually part of the ditch. A 3rd pit was opened today and will be expanded tomorrow.

Thursday 24 October
I visited today and heard the news that both bronze age and iron age sherds had been found. Chris was busy drawing context diagrams when I arrived and entrusted me with the Sherds for cleaning and so I can show them to the public at a lecture I am giving in March on Monday. All very exciting. More work needs to be done on identifying all the finds but we are already learning so much more about the site.
Saturday 26 October
Rain, Rain Rain. Nobody on site as the deluge has made it too dangerous. If the Sky brightens we will hopefully be there tomorrow for a last day of recording and filling in.
Sunday 27 October
A good news/bad news day. Still too wet and slippery to get much done but the landowner has agreed to us being on site for a little longer so as it dries out we can achieve more than we hope to. Special mention must be made of the all female team of FenArch volunteers drinking tea in the barn when I arrived prior to another ‘pitch’ inspection. Where were all the chaps?
